Croatia’s Slow and Happy Life (Level 1)

Posted on 20.10.2025

In Croatia, people live slowly and happily. They call this way of life “pomalo”. It means “take it easy” and “no hurry”.

Many people in the city of Dubrovnik live this way every day. They drink coffee slowly. They talk with friends for a long time. They enjoy the sun, the sea, and good food.

A Trip to Dubrovnik

One woman visits Dubrovnik alone. She wants to rest from her busy life in New York. She says, “I need to live pomalo.” She stays in a small hotel in the old town. Every morning, she drinks coffee on the roof and watches people walk below.

Local people explain that pomalo is more than “take it easy.” It means to live slowly, enjoy the moment, and be calm. In Dubrovnik, people don’t rush. Coffee is not fast. Conversations are not short.

She goes swimming with her friend Ivan. The water is blue and clear. After the swim, they eat lunch and talk for hours. She feels her stress go away. She feels calm and happy. This is pomalo.

The Pomalo Lifestyle

Many people believe pomalo is good for life and travel. Visitors should not rush from place to place. They should enjoy one moment at a time.

In Dubrovnik, people love long meals. They eat fish, pasta, and local cheese. They drink wine slowly. They talk and laugh.

How to Live Pomalo

Drink coffee slowly and watch people.

Swim in the sea in the afternoon.

Eat local food with friends.

Walk without a plan.

People in Dubrovnik say:
“Pomalo, vrag odnio prešu!”
It means “Slowly — the devil takes the rush!”

Pomalo teaches us to enjoy small things: good food, sea air, sunshine, and time with friends. Life feels better when we live slowly.
