Why Wild Venison Can Be Better Than Beef (Level 1)

Posted on 20.09.2025

Many people around the world eat meat. The most popular meat is beef. Beef comes from cows. People eat it in burgers, steaks, and many other dishes. But beef is very bad for the climate.

Cows make a lot of methane gas when they eat. Methane is very strong. It makes the Earth hotter. Beef farming also needs a lot of land. Forests and grasslands are cut to make space for cows. This cutting gives more carbon dioxide to the air. Farming cows also uses a lot of water, food, and energy.

Because of this, many people want to eat in a more climate-friendly way. Some people stop eating meat. Some eat only a little meat. Some try new foods like tofu or plant-based burgers.

In Scotland, there is another option: wild venison. Venison is meat from deer.

Too Many Deer in Scotland

In Scotland, there are about one million deer today. In 1990, there were only half a million. The number of deer is growing fast. Why? Because long ago, people killed wolves and lynx. These animals were natural predators. Without predators, the deer population grows too big.

When there are too many deer, they eat too many young trees. This is bad for forests. Forests cannot grow, and new trees die. But forests are very important. Trees take carbon dioxide from the air and help the climate.

So the government in Scotland kills some deer every year. This is called a cull. The cull helps control the deer population and protects the forests.

Venison and the Climate

Venison is a special meat because it comes from wild deer. People do not farm wild deer. The animals already live in nature. This means no extra land, no big farms, and no animal feed are needed.

Scientists say that eating venison can be better for the climate than eating beef. But venison is not perfect. Deer also make methane gas, just like cows. Some experts say this methane should be counted. Other experts say deer make methane anyway, even if people do not eat them.

So, is venison good or bad for the climate? The answer is not simple.

Another important point is the hunters. Hunters kill the deer. If hunters travel long distances in cars, they use petrol. Petrol makes carbon dioxide. This adds to the carbon footprint of venison.

But if hunters live near the forest and hunt locally, the climate impact is much smaller. Good hunters, who do not waste time and fuel, make venison more climate-friendly.

Comparing Meat

Scientists compare different meats by looking at how much carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) they produce.

Beef: very high (about 25kg CO2e per 100g protein)

Pork: medium (about 6.5kg CO2e)

Chicken: lower (about 4.3kg CO2e)

Tofu or peas: very low (0.4–1.6kg CO2e)

Wild venison: about 11.9kg CO2e

This shows: venison is better than beef, but not as good as chicken or plants.

Why Deer Control Helps Nature

Deer eat many young trees. This stops forests from growing. But forests are very important for the climate. They clean the air, give us oxygen, and take in carbon dioxide.

When people cull deer, forests can grow better. This helps fight climate change. So, eating venison can help people and nature at the same time.

Wild venison cannot feed everyone. Even if all deer in Scotland were killed, it would not be enough meat for the whole country. But for people who want meat, it is a better option than beef.

Eating venison supports local hunters. It helps control deer numbers. It helps forests grow. And it gives people tasty meat.

For the climate, no meat is better than any meat. But if you want meat, wild venison can be a good choice.
