Take a Last-Minute Holiday for Less  (Level 2)

Posted on 29.08.2025

Sometimes we forget to plan a holiday. Suddenly, we feel tired and want a break, but we think it is too late. Don’t worry! With the right ideas, you can still travel, even if you decide just a few days before. Experts say that being flexible and smart can help you save money and enjoy your trip.

Be Open and Flexible

The most important tip is to be flexible. This means you should not only choose one city or one date. Flights become expensive when the travel date is close, but if you are open to new places, you can find cheaper tickets.

For example, maybe you wanted to fly to Rome, but a flight to Madrid is cheaper. You can change your plan and still enjoy a new city. Travel search engines like Google Flights or KAYAK can show flights to “anywhere,” so you can see many options. Flexibility also means choosing different days. Flying on Wednesday or Thursday is often cheaper than on weekends. The more flexible you are, the more chances you have to save.

Try Different Ways to Travel

Flying is not the only way. If flights are too expensive, think about buses, trains, or even a short road trip. Buses are often cheaper, even if you book one or two days before. In big countries like the United States or Canada, bus companies run many routes every day, so you can often find a good ticket at the last moment.

Travelling by bus can also be more relaxing. You do not need to go to the airport, wait in long lines, or worry about luggage. Many modern buses offer Wi-Fi, more legroom, and comfortable seats. This can make your trip easier and even faster than flying, especially for short distances between cities.

Find a Place to Stay

After choosing how to travel, you need somewhere to sleep. Hotels are different from airlines. While plane tickets become more expensive close to the travel date, hotels often become cheaper. Hotels do not want empty rooms, so they give discounts. This is good news for last-minute travellers.

There are apps, such as HotelTonight or Hopper, that show special deals for last-minute bookings. You can also call the hotel directly to ask if they have cheaper rooms. Sometimes the hotel staff can give you a better price. If you want to save more, try travelling during the week. Mid-week stays often cost less than weekends.

Enjoy the Adventure

A last-minute trip can feel like an adventure. You may not go to the place you first imagined, but you will discover something new. Some companies even offer “mystery holidays,” where you only learn your destination right before leaving. This surprise can be exciting and fun.

The key is to relax and not stress about planning everything. Let the prices and opportunities guide you. Be ready to pack your bag quickly, and enjoy wherever you go. The best memories often come when we do not plan too much.
