Wild horses in Bosnia featured in a news easy English article for English learners

Wild Horses in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Level 2)

Posted on 27.03.2025

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are horses that live freely in nature. These horses live in the mountains and valleys near the town of Livno. Many tourists now visit this area to see the horses.

Where Do the Horses Come From?

A long time ago, farmers used horses for work. But when machines came, farmers did not need horses anymore. So, they let the horses go free. These horses lived in the wild. Today, there are about 1,000 horses in the area. They are called Bosnian Mountain Horses.

Problems and Protection

These horses were once seen as a problem. They ate crops and drank water from farms. In winter, they licked salt from roads and sometimes caused accidents. Some farmers even tried to kill the horses. In 2009, the government protected the horses, but they stopped the protection in 2017 because of high costs.

Tourists Help the Horses

In the last 20 years, many more people have visited Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tourists want to see the wild horses. This helps the local people make money. Some groups help protect the horses. Volunteers take care of the animals and help solve problems between farmers and horses.

Visiting the Horses

The best place to see the horses is in Livno. The horses move around a lot, so it is a good idea to go with a local guide. Some tour companies also offer transport from the town to the mountains. These companies give some of their money to protect the horses.
