Houston's po' boy sandwich with pickles, cheese, salami, and chow chow – featured in an easy English newspaper article.

Houston’s Special Sandwich (Level 1)

Posted on 25.03.2025

A long time ago, a man named Jalal Antone came to Houston, a big city in Texas, USA. He wanted to sell Middle Eastern food, like hummus, olives, and falafel.

But many people in Houston did not know this food. So Jalal had an idea.
He made a sandwich that people in Houston would like. This sandwich was called a po’ boy.

What is a Po’ Boy?

A po’ boy is a big sandwich with:

  • Bread
  • Meat (like ham or salami)
  • Cheese
  • Pickles
  • A special vegetable mix called chow chow

Jalal changed the chow chow. He added Middle Eastern spices like paprika and turmeric. This made the sandwich taste new and special.

People Loved It

People in Houston loved the sandwich. It was easy to eat, cheap, and tasty.
Many people came to Jalal’s store, called Antone’s, to buy the sandwich.

Later, other people also made their own po’ boys, like Droubi’s and Kojak’s. They made new versions, but all of them were based on Jalal’s idea.

Today

Even today, people in Houston still eat Antone’s po’ boy sandwiches.
You can buy them in shops, stores, and even universities in Texas.

The sandwich is a mix of:

  • Middle Eastern food
  • Southern American food
  • New ideas

It shows how different cultures can make something delicious together.
