Why People in Singapore Live Long Lives (Level 1)

Posted on 26.08.2025

Singapore is a small country in Asia. Long ago, people did not live very long in Singapore. In 1960, the average life was 65 years. But now, people live longer. Many people live past 86 years.

In 2023, Singapore became the sixth “Blue Zone” in the world. Blue Zones are places where people live long and healthy lives. Other Blue Zones are in Greece, Italy, Japan, and Costa Rica. But Singapore is different. It became a Blue Zone because of smart government rules, not old traditions.

Health and Food

The government wants people to live healthy lives. There are big taxes on cigarettes and alcohol. Smoking in public is not allowed. This makes the streets cleaner and safer.

The food in Singapore often has sugar, salt, and coconut milk. But the government wants people to eat better. Today, drinks must show sugar labels. People can see how healthy or unhealthy the drink is.

One man, Firdaus, says, “When I see the label, I do not buy sweet drinks.”

Singapore also has good hospitals. Everyone has access to healthcare. There are public and private options. People can also use health savings to help pay for care.

Parks and Green Spaces

Singapore is full of trees, flowers, and clean parks. The government builds many green areas in the city. This makes the city beautiful and calm.

Charu, a woman who lives in Singapore, says, “The city is very clean and green. The parks and gardens are everywhere.”

She likes the Singapore Botanic Gardens. It is in the city and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has many orchids and is good for families and visitors.

Public parks are very popular. People walk, run, and do exercise there. Many people go to East Coast Park to walk near the sea and relax with family.

Exercise and being with other people helps people stay healthy and happy.

Rules and Life

Singapore is clean, safe, and peaceful. But it is also expensive. It is one of the most costly places to live.

The country has strict rules. You cannot litter or smoke in public. There are rules for walking on the street. There are strong laws against drugs.

But many people like the rules. They say it keeps the country safe and nice.

The government wants people to live well and be kind to others. It works to keep peace and help the economy.

Singapore also loves its many cultures. People celebrate Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Ramadan, and more.

Charu says, “This city is for everyone. It is full of life, food, and color.”
