A farmer in Kenya installing a beehive fence to protect crops from elephants. Beehive fences help prevent elephant raids on farms.

Why Do Elephants Fear Beehives? (Level 2)

Posted on 21.03.2025

In Kenya and other African countries, farmers have a big problem. Elephants enter farms and eat crops, causing serious damage. This makes life difficult for farmers because they lose food and money. However, researchers have found a simple and natural solution—beehives! Elephants are very afraid of bee stings. When they hear bees buzzing, they quickly run away.

Farmers now use “beehive fences” to protect their crops. These fences have beehives hanging on wires around the farms. When an elephant touches the wire, the hives shake, and bees come out. The elephants get scared and leave. This method has helped many farmers in Kenya. One farmer, Emmanuel Mwamba, said, “We started with two beehive fences. Now, we have 700 beehives in three villages!”

Beehive fences are not only useful for keeping elephants away but also help farmers in other ways. Farmers can collect and sell honey, which gives them extra money. The method is natural and safe, reducing conflicts between people and elephants. Scientists are now testing beehive fences in other countries such as Tanzania, Mozambique, and Sri Lanka. Thailand is also trying this method to protect farms from elephants.

Beehive fences are a smart and natural way to stop elephants from entering farms. They help farmers protect their crops, earn more money, and live peacefully with elephants. Thanks to this simple idea, many farmers no longer worry about losing their crops.
